“What ya dae-in that fur, ya idiot?” were the words mother declared when I told her I would not be around at Christmas as I would be rowing solo across the Atlantic. Not the usual reaction from someone I get when explaining about The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. As always, she made me smile at her very sharp and perhaps not unreasonable response - I must add that this is not the first time that she had used that quote about me.
Since I was young I have always been taken by adventure and the ability of people to push themselves to test their endurance to the limits. With all the incredible challenges around the world for those willing to test themselves, there are equally those who say, ‘You can’t do that, it’s impossible’. I always see such statements as things to be challenged as well. Hard work and dedication push me forward and I am not frightened of making mistakes; indeed that is how we learn. I hope my challenge inspires others to take on challenges and keep working hard towards the things they want. Indeed, in the words of Hunter S Thompson, 'Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing'. Roll on December 2019!
